JANUARY 08, 2020

Jakarta. Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, or Kadin, has been appointed as the country’s chef de mission for the Tokyo Olympics that will run from July 24.

His appointment was signed by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zainuddin Amali and National Olympic Committee (NOC) President Raja Sapta Oktohari.

“I’m grateful and honored for being trusted with this job,” Rosan said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Rosan is also chairman of the Indonesian Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association, which has consistently contributed medals to the country in recent international sporting events.

He said his immediate task was to coordinate preparations among athletes and officials from various sport disciplines to set a common spirit inside the team and achieve the best possible results.

A special team will be set up together with the NOC to analyze performance by any Indonesian athlete during the summer Olympics, he said.

Indonesia expects to send a bigger team from just 28 athletes during the 2016 Rio Olympics.

According to the NOC, only six athletes have qualified for Tokyo so far, among them are sprinter Lalu Muhammad Zohri and weightlifters Eko Yuli Irawan and Windy Cantika Aisyah. At least 74 Indonesian athletes in 16 sport disciplines are currently fighting for their tickets to Tokyo. Qualifications of all sport disciplines for the Tokyo Olympics will conclude in April.

In the Rio Olympics, Indonesia won a gold medal from badminton and two silver medals from weightlifting.

From the total 30 Olympic medals gained by Indonesia since 1988, 19 have come from badminton.
