Jakarta. The Ministry of Tourism hopes that the Weekend of Wonders of Islamic Boarding School event, held by Pesantren Sirnarasa in Ciamis, West Java, in early September will help drive further development of halal tourism in Indonesia.

The event successfully drew more than 60,000 visitors during its three-day tenure.

"The event can be a model, reference and standard in the development of halal tourism in Indonesia," Ahman Sya, deputy minister for tourism institutional development, said in a statement on Sept. 5.

The event, themed "One Voice to Save the World Resources," features Musabaqoh Tilawatil Qur’an (a Koranic reading contest), speech contest, nationalism education seminar, entrepreneurship training, free alternative therapy, mass circumcision ceremony, an exhibition of handicraft products and an exhibition of books by Abah Gaos, the founder of Sirnarasa Pesantren.

Esthy Reko Astuti, deputy for tourism development at the ministry, said the event aims to promote religious events as tourist attractions.

Ahmad said halal tourism should be able to shape society by implementing positive religious values.
