President Inaugurates Digital Farming Program in Indramayu
JUNE 18, 2018
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has inaugurated the Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Digitization of Agricultural Systems program in Sliyeg, Indramayu, West Java.
During the launch on June 7 in attendance were State Enterprises Minister Rini M. Soemarno, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman, Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto, West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan and local officials.
The digitization of agricultural systems is supported by Telkom Indonesia (Telkom).
"The government encourages implementation of agricultural management systems to improve welfare," the president said, adding that in the future agriculture will be organized in a corporate way.
According to Telkom president director Alex J. Sinaga, agricultural digitization can facilitate the monitoring of work, the area and the time of planting and harvesting. These data can later be used to maximize productivity and optimize operational efficiency.
"This program is a pilot project for digitizing agricultural systems in Indonesia. It is expected that farmers who previously only planted rice will now also become entrepreneurs," he said.
Telkom has established an integrated digital platform called Logtan, which provides information about individual farmers, types of agricultural lands, business credit requirements, insurance, etc.
The Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Digitization of Agricultural Systems program will address various problems faced by farmers, such as weak bargaining power and unsustainable farmer incentives.
The program will be implemented in 11 districts of West Java, including Karawang, Majalengka, Ciamis and Cianjur.
