Jakarta. Former speaker of the House of Representatives, Setya Novanto, who is currently on trial in a multimillion-dollar graft case, will seek to become a justice collaborator, his lawyer said on Wednesday (10/01).

Setya's defenders are now drafting his request to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to be granted the justice collaborator status, lawyer Firman Jaya said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

According to Firman, his client wants to help KPK investigators in finding other individuals linked to the multimillion-dollar graft case involving procurement of national electronic identity cards (e-KTP).

"[The request] will be considered and examined," KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah said.

A justice collaborator must admit to his wrongdoing and cooperate in uncovering the roles of other persons implicated. However, if a person becomes the main suspect in a case, he is not eligible to become a justice collaborator, Febri explained.

Antigraft prosecutors charged the former Golkar Party chairman with embezzling $7.3 million from the Rp 5.9 trillion ($439 million) project, which caused Rp 2.3 trillion state losses.

In Setya's trial session on Wednesday, KPK investigators also questioned his wife Deisti Astriani Tagor, daughter Dwina Michaella and son Rheza Herwindo.

Two officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs have already been convicted in the case, while several others, including lawmakers and a businessman, remain suspects.

KPK has also questioned as witnesses former lawmakers — Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and North Sulawesi Governor Olly Dondokambey — and Justice Minister Yasona Laoly, who when the e-KTP project started were all members of House Commission II, which oversees home affairs.
