Tangerang. National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia kicked off its first return flight between Jakarta and Banyuwangi on Friday (08/09) as part of efforts to cater to rising demand for flights between the capital and East Java.

The inaugural flight from Terminal 3 at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Cengkareng, Banten, was witnessed by Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, Garuda president director Pahala N. Mansury and Agus Santoso, director general of aviation at the Ministry of Transportation.

In his keynote address, Arief expressed his appreciation for Garuda move to connect Jakarta and Banyuwangi. He said the East Java city welcomes about 4 million domestic and 100,000 foreign tourists annually.

He said the improved connectivity will allow the city to receive an even bigger influx of tourists.

The minster said the government plans to upgrade Banyuwangi's Blimbingsari Airport, which is operated by state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II.

Pahala of Garuda said there will be five flights per week between Jakarta and Banyuwangi. Flights will be on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. He added that the airline will use Bombarier CRJ 1000 NextGen aircraft, which can carry 96 passengers.
